ATHLETICS

Heavy athletics refer to the athletic events which require significant strength and power; as opposed to the light athletics, which require stamina, such as highland dancing, sprinting, running, and jumping. Heavy athletics include stone-throwing, weight tossing, hammer-throwing, caber turning, and sheaf tossing. It is the intent of Scottish Heavy Athletics to facilitate and promote the Heavy Events that are a traditional part of Highland Games and Gatherings. Scottish Heavy Athletics was started in 2004 by five longtime Highland Games athletes with the purpose and desire to make a positive contribution to Highland Athletics.
